Located at Ponta de S. Lourenço, the easternmost peninsula of the island was named by the explorers when they discovered the Island, after the caravel of Joao Gonçalves Zarco.

The Baía d´Abra Viewpoint offers a spectacular view over Ponta de S. Lourenço and its coastline, which features an irregular profile resulting from the erosion caused by wind and water on the various volcanic materials, with views of the northern and southern coasts of the island.

The Cabo Aéreo Viewpoint, in Arco de São Jorge, has a picnic area with a view of the sea, São Jorge pebble beach and remains.

This viewpoint is named for the cable that was once used to assist farmers and fishermen in transporting their goods a tradition which is still maintained till nowdays.

From this point you have a magnificent view of the sea and the São Jorge pebble beach and some ruins.

O miradouro do Cabo Aéreo, no Arco de São Jorge, é dotado de um parque de merendas onde pode aproveitar para apreciar a paisagem.

O nome deste miradouro deve-se ao cabo que aí existente e que em tempos era, utilizado para auxiliar os agricultores e pescadores no transporte dos seus bens.

A partir deste ponto usufruímos de uma magnífica vista sobre o mar e sobre o Calhau de São Jorge e as Ruinas.

Localizado na Ponta de S. Lourenço, península mais a este da ilha assim baptizada com o nome da caravela de Joao Gonçalves Zarco pelos descobridores aquando a descoberta da Ilha.

O Miradouro da Baía d´Abra dá-nos uma espetacular vista sobre a Ponta de S. Lourenço e a sua orla costeira que apresenta um recorte caprichoso fruto da erosão provocada pelas águas do mar e pelos ventos sobre os vários materiais eruptivos, com vistas sobre a costa norte e sul da ilha.

OMiradouro dos Balcões permite-nos observar o vale da Ribeira da Metade. Daqui podemos ainda avistar a Cordilheira Central da ilha.

O Miradouro dos Balcões encontra-se no fim da Vereda dos Balcões. Com início no Ribeiro Frio, este pequeno trilho segue a Levada da Serra do Faial, dando acesso ao Miradouro dos Balcões.

A partir deste miradouro podemos apreciar as vistas magníficas sobre o vale da Ribeira da Metade. Podemos ainda avistar a Cordilheira Central da Ilha, destacando-se os dois picos mais altos, o Pico do Areeiro e o Pico Ruivo, assim como a Penha D´Águia, em dias de céu limpo.

The Balcões Viewpoint is located at the end of the Vereda dos Balcões. Starting at Ribeiro Frio, this small trail follows the Levada da Serra do Faial, giving access to the Balcões Viewpoint.

From this viewpoint you may enjoy the magnificent views of the Ribeira da Metade valley. You can also see the island’s Central Mountain Range, including the two highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, as well as, on a clear day, Penha D’Águia cliff.

A treasure in the Atlantic: Europe, heritage, art and beauty.

The Museum of Sacred Art of Funchal houses since 1955 a patrimonial set comprised by collections of paintings, sculptures, goldsmithery, textiles and liturgical vestments, witnessing five centuries of Madeiras Island History.

Of special note among the collections of the Museum are the Flemish paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries that were sent to Madeira during the so-called golden era of sugar production. The Flemish panels are notable not only for their high quality, but also for their large sizes, which are not common in the other museums of Europe that keep Flemish painting collections. Also worthy of special mention are the collection of Flemish sculptures, coming mainly from Malines and Antwerp; the collection of Portuguese painting and sculpture from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries and the goldsmithery section which includes a processional cross offered to the Funchal Cathedral by King D. Manuel I.

O Museu de Arte Sacra do Funchal expõe, desde 1955 um conjunto patrimonial composto por coleções de pintura, escultura, ourivesaria, têxteis e paramentaria que testemunham cinco séculos de história da ilha da Madeira.

Entre as coleções do Museu destaca-se a pintura flamenga dos séculos XV e XVI, que chegou à Madeira durante a chamada época áurea da produção açucareira. Os painéis de pintura flamengos distinguem-se não só pela sua grande qualidade artística como pelas suas grandes dimensões, pouco comuns nos exemplares de arte flamenga presentes em outros museus da Europa. É de realçar, ainda, a coleção de escultura flamenga, proveniente especialmente de Malines e de Antuérpia; a coleção de pintura e escultura portuguesas dos séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII e o núcleo de ourivesaria onde se inclui uma cruz processional, oferecida por D. Manuel I à Sé do Funchal.
