Brief description of Museu Quinta das Cruzes
Throughout the centuries innumerable improvements were made to the original house transforming it into one of the finest examples of a Madeiran Manor House, which includes the main house, a chapel, a small pleasure house and gardens.
In 1946 it was acquired by the Government in order to house the collection of its first benefactor, César Filipe Gomes. Several other pieces were bestowed to the museum by benefactors, one being João Wetzler. Over the years the museum has also obtained various items which are on display.
The decorative arts collection incorporates Paintings, Sculputure, Glyptic, Silver and Goldsmith art, Jewellery, Ceramics, Drawings and Engravings and Furniture (Portuguese and Foreign Furniture, which for the most part is English), wich lies chronologically between the XV and 1st half of XX centuries.
At the gardens is displayed the Orchestrophone, a mecanical instrument dated from 1900 and a Sculpture Cluster of the Museu Quinta das Cruzes, that includes elements some of which going back to the late 15th century.
